Event Details
In our interactive demonstration workshops, teachers explore instructional practices that dramatically increase motivation, confidence, and achievement at all ability levels. Participants read, discuss ideas, and observe expert teachers working with real students in a full-sized classroom laboratory.
Course instructors and participating teachers will read, discuss, and implement ideas from Katie Wood Ray's In Pictures and in Words. Filled with classroom research and ideas for using artwork with students, this text encourages teachers to help students use images as a bridge to the written word. By studying the text and observing demonstration lessons in the two-week workshop, teachers will learn how exploring illustrations can help children deepen thinking, organize their thoughts, and develop their written voices.
Demonstration lessons will help teachers understand and address the Common Core Standards that have been adopted by the California State Board of Education and will be implemented over the next three years.
Participating teachers work in separate grade-span groups (K-2 and 3-6) with experienced leaders. Working together, everyone discovers more effective ways to meet the unique writing needs of their students.
Daizy Grewal commented on her experience at the 2011 program:
"The coursework not only solidified the Writing Process / Writer’s Workshop approach, but it also encouraged deeper and more meaningful learning to take place through synthesis of a variety of ideas from everyone involved."
